What is Gold Micron?
“Gold micron” refers to the thickness of gold plated on a piece of jewellery. A micron is one-millionth of a metre (0.001 mm). When a brand says 18K gold micron plated, it means a measurable, thicker layer of 18-karat gold has been deposited on the surface, usually over 925 sterling silver, to improve colour, shine and durability.
By contrast, “gold plated” without any thickness specified is often a very thin “flash” layer (commonly ~0.05–0.1 microns). Micron plating typically starts at 1.0 micron and can go higher depending on the design and wear area.
How thick is a micron, really?
-
1 micron (µm) = 0.001 mm.
-
Typical ranges you’ll see in jewellery:
-
Flash plating: ~0.05–0.1 µm
-
Micron plating: ~1.0–2.0+ µm
-
Vermeil standard (US): ≥2.5 µm of gold over sterling silver, minimum 10k gold
Thicker coating = better resistance to wear from skin oils, friction and moisture.

Gold plated vs. micron plated vs. vermeil vs. solid gold
Finish | Gold purity | Typical thickness | Base metal | Durability | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Gold plated (flash) | Usually 14–18k | ~0.05–0.1 µm | Varies | Low | Beautiful at first, but the ultra-thin layer can wear with frequent use. |
Gold micron plated | Usually 18k | ~1.0–2.0+ µm | Often 925 silver | Medium–High | A measurable, thicker deposition for longer-lasting colour and shine. |
Vermeil | ≥10k (often 14–18k) | ≥2.5 µm | 925 silver | High | Legal standard in the US: thick gold over sterling silver. |
Solid gold | 14k / 18k / 22k | n/a | Solid | Very High | Heirloom-level durability; price reflects metal value. |
Why 18K for micron plating?
18K strikes a balance of rich colour and surface hardness. Higher karats like 22K are softer and scratch more easily; lower karats look less “golden.” 18K rose or yellow gold shades are consistent and flattering on most skin tones.
How long does gold micron plating last?
It depends on thickness, your skin’s pH, and how you wear the piece. With 1–2 microns on high-touch areas (rings, bracelets), you can expect good day-to-day performance. Earrings and pendants typically last longer because they see less friction.
Typical real-world guidance:
-
Rings/bracelets: 12–24 months before you might consider a refresh, sooner with rough wear.
-
Necklaces/earrings: often several years with normal care.
Replating is possible and much cheaper than replacing the entire piece.
Care: make it last
-
Remove before heavy workouts, swimming, or using lotions/sanitiser.
-
After wear, wipe with a soft, dry cloth.
-
Store individually in a pouch to avoid scratches.
-
Avoid abrasive cloths or chemicals meant for raw metals; the coating is already bright.
Is gold micron plating safe for sensitive skin?
Most micron-plated pieces use 18K gold over 925 sterling silver. Both are generally well-tolerated. If you’re nickel-sensitive, look for nickel-safe findings and posts and choose sterling-silver cores rather than unknown base metals.
How do you measure “microns”?
Thickness is controlled during electroplating and can be confirmed with industry tools like XRF (X-ray fluorescence). Reputable makers will specify a range (for example “~1.0–1.5 µm”) because exact thickness can vary slightly across a complex shape.
When should I choose micron plated over solid gold?
-
You want real-gold colour and shine without the solid-gold price.
-
You’re shopping for statement designs that you won’t wear 24/7 for decades.
-
You care about sterling-silver cores and hallmarking for quality.
Choose solid gold for pieces that never leave your body (wedding bands, heirlooms) or where long-term value retention is important.
How we finish our pieces (brand note)
Many Mystic Carat designs are crafted in 925 sterling silver and finished with 18K gold micron plating for a richer, longer-lasting glow. Hallmark and material details are listed on each product page so you can choose exactly what suits your lifestyle.
FAQ
Does gold micron plating tarnish?
The gold itself doesn’t tarnish, but the surface can pick up residue from cosmetics and sweat. A quick wipe restores shine. Over long periods, any plated layer can show wear on high-friction points.
Is it waterproof?
Water isn’t the enemy; chemicals are. Clean water is fine, but pool chlorine, perfumes and sanitisers will shorten the coating’s life. Treat it like your favourite silk: it appreciates gentle handling.
Can gold micron plating be redone?
Yes. Replating brings the piece back to its original glow and is cost-effective compared with buying new.
What’s the difference between “micron plated” and “vermeil”?
Micron plated describes thickness. Vermeil is a standard: at least 2.5 microns of gold over sterling silver (and minimum 10k). All vermeil is micron-plated; not all micron-plated pieces meet the vermeil threshold.
